A free evening on the Washington Channel

The Wharf runs the 34th Annual Holiday Boat Parade & Party on Saturday, December 5, 2026, 5pm to 8pm at District Pier. More than 60 decorated boats parade up the Washington Channel. Landside programming runs along Wharf Street and the piers: live music and DJs on several stages, ornament decorating and games for children in M Street Landing, holiday karaoke, photos with Santa in The Grove, a 45-foot nautical-inspired tree on District Pier, and a fireworks finale over the channel at about 8 p.m.

Spectator admission is free. The Wharf's event page states that no tickets are needed to enjoy the festivities on the piers or along Wharf Street. A team's cost for the parade itself comes down to getting there and eating there.

The rink rents to groups of 2 to 120

The Wharf Ice Rink sits on Transit Pier at 970 Wharf Street SW, outside The Anthem. The Wharf's event-space page lists the rink for rent to corporate events, birthday parties and social events for groups of 2 to 120 people, with skate rentals, skate aid rentals and curling packages available on request. The rink's own page adds food and beverage packages and s'mores at the firepit to the rental offer.

Two details need confirming before a date goes on a calendar. The rink page says the rink is closed for the season and that skating returns in December 2026, with no opening day published inside that month. The rental request runs through a questionnaire that asks for a preferred date, an alternate date, a start time, an end time and the group size. The venue asks for up to two business days to respond.

No rate for a rink rental appears on any Wharf page. Put December 5 in as the preferred date, put a second date in the alternate field, and hold the budget until the quote arrives.

An itinerary that ends at the fireworks

A workable shape for a team of a dozen: arrive mid-afternoon, take a rink block late afternoon, eat at one of the Wharf restaurants, then walk to District Pier for the 8 p.m. fireworks. Transit Pier and District Pier both front the same stretch of the Washington Channel. The Wharf fires the show from a barge in the channel at approximately 8 p.m.

Book the rink block against the fireworks time. A rental that ends at 7:30 p.m. leaves half an hour to reach the pier and find a spot.

Getting a dozen people onto the waterfront

Metro's Waterfront station is a five-minute walk from The Wharf. Riders who use L'Enfant Plaza can take The Wharf Shuttle, a free service that stops at CVS and 7th Street Park. Three underground garages at The Wharf stay open around the clock and fill quickly on event days. The Wharf's getting-here page points overflow traffic to Ace Parking at L'Enfant Plaza (420 10th St SW), L'Enfant East Parking Garage (840 D St SW) and the 1100 4th St SW garage.

House rules that change a group plan

Chairs and coolers are barred at The Wharf at any time. Alcohol is legal only inside restaurants, on licensed patios and inside licensed event areas. Outside alcohol is barred under District law. Cameras with lenses longer than six inches are barred except for credentialed media, and tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are barred outright. Pets are welcome in outdoor spaces. The Wharf recommends Benjamin Banneker Park near 9th and Maine Avenue SW as the relief area and warns that the 8 p.m. fireworks make for a loud evening. The ice rink takes no cash.

Public restrooms sit at the Fish Market, Transit Pier, 800 Water Street, the Oculus and The Terrace. Give a dozen people those five locations in the pre-arrival note.

Indoor space if the weather turns

The Wharf rents three spaces that back up an outdoor plan. The Dockmaster Building holds 2,000 square feet at the end of the 450-foot District Pier, with capacity for 140 standing and 100 seated. District Pier offers 8,000 square feet of outdoor space for 800 standing, reservable whole or in part. Transit Pier offers 7,000 square feet of tentable outdoor space for 700 standing. All three go through the Wharf's event questionnaire.

Four hotels operate at The Wharf, per the event-space page: Pendry Washington DC, Canopy by Hilton Washington DC The Wharf, Hyatt House and InterContinental Washington DC - The Wharf.

Rooms for the night

A twelve-person team needs about six rooms. bookMyTeam publishes group rates on a block of 10 or more rooms a night, so a six-room request goes through the RFP route at /rfp/submit. The service costs nothing to submit and sends the request to 50 or more hotels per destination.

bookMyTeam publishes a 15-40% saving below rack rates as the band competitive bidding produces. Treat that as a benchmark for the quotes rather than a price on any property. A larger contingent can model a block on the group rate calculator, and the city directory carries the district list.

The bookings worth making now run in one order: submit the rink questionnaire with December 5 and an alternate date, then open the room request once the rink confirms. Every event date and venue detail above comes from The Wharf's own pages, and the rental rate is the one number a planner still has to ask for.
