AGU26 Opens on Monday 7 December
AGU26 runs 7-11 December 2026 at the George R. Moscone Convention Center, 747 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103. The meeting page reads "25,000+ attendees from 100+ countries." The press office release reads "More than 24,000 attendees will present research." Sessions also run at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, 780 Mission St, and at InterContinental San Francisco, 888 Howard St. A research group walks between all three buildings across five days.
Five Nights Puts the Team on the Ground Sunday
Monday 7 December opens the program. Friday 11 December closes it. A Sunday 6 December check-in and a Friday 11 December check-out gives a team five nights on the ground. A Saturday departure adds a sixth night. AGU publishes a Schedule at a Glance grid for the day-by-day detail. Match that grid to the room dates before the request goes out.
The Block Holds 44 Properties and Closes 19 November
AGU publishes the block as a numbered hotel map. The map keys 44 properties, from the Axiom Hotel and the Beacon Grand through The Westin St. Francis, Fairmont San Francisco and Yotel San Francisco. AGU states that it has secured exclusive discounted hotel rates for AGU26 attendees at top-rated, conveniently located hotels, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Two block properties are also meeting venues. The InterContinental San Francisco at 888 Howard St and the San Francisco Marriott Marquis at 780 Mission St both sit on the key.
Bookings close 19 November 2026, and AGU adds that the block may fill before that date. From 15 October, the close sits 35 days out. Registration and housing run through Maritz, the vendor AGU names as official for AGU26. The Member Service Center answers on service@agu.org, 800.966.2481 and +1 202.462.6900, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
What Five Nights Across the Block Costs a Team
AGU publishes no per-night rate outside the booking portal. Price the block against a target the team can defend. Six rooms across five nights is 30 room-nights. At an example $250 a night, that lands at $7,500, or $1,250 per person for the week. The example rate is the planner's own input.
bookMyTeam publishes a group band of 15-40% below rack rates. Its group-rate calculator opens at a default 10% discount and labels that figure conservative against the 15-30% it reports securing. Apply the band to the same 30 room-nights. At 15% off, $6,375. At 30% off, $5,250. At 40% off, $4,500. The spread between the three figures is $1,875.
Name the room count in the request. Most hotels offer group rates from 10 rooms per night. bookMyTeam adds that some hotels discount from five rooms, depending on season and availability. A six-room team on a five-night window sits under the standard threshold, so the request belongs on the RFP route.
The Costs That Sit Outside the Room
AGU charges presenters an abstract submission fee. That fee is separate from membership dues and from meeting registration. The published figures are $80 for a regular submission and $45 for a student submission. Authors whose affiliation sits in a World Bank low-income or lower-middle-income country pay nothing, and the system waives the fee during submission. Payment is by credit card only, the fee is non-refundable, and each abstract carries its own fee. Six regular presenters carry $480 before the first room night.
First authors must hold AGU membership or affiliated-society membership. AGU's meeting page carries 5 November as the last day to register at the early rate, and AGU's education section carries 6 November for the same deadline. Confirm the day when the order goes in.
What Goes in the Request
Six rooms, five nights, Sunday 6 December check-in, Friday 11 December check-out, and 747 Howard St as the anchor address. Add the two co-venues so the hotels can bid on the walk to either one. Name the 19 November close inside the request and set a decision date ahead of it.
One request reaches 50+ hotels in San Francisco, collects responses within 24-72 hours, and carries no markup. The San Francisco directory lists 562 hotels, and the RFP form takes the room count, the dates and a target nightly rate. AGU's travel page carries the airfare discount routes for the week.
AGU27 sits at 13-17 December 2027 in Washington, DC.
