An 18-team bracket, six days, one block

The 30th TIAA Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Tournament runs March 9 to 14, 2027 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, 125 South Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis. Six days. Eighteen teams. Single elimination. The conference published the window and the round structure with its 2026-27 schedule release on 16 September 2026.

An athletic department sending players, staff, a pep band and a spirit squad has one travel party and no fixed return date. The party size is known months out. The number of nights is not.

The published bracket fixes six departure mornings

The conference publishes who plays when. Tuesday, March 9 opens with a pair of games among the 15-18 seeds. Wednesday carries four contests, as Tuesday's winners join seeds 9-14. Seeds 5-8 begin play Thursday. The top four seeds open in Friday's quarterfinals. The semifinals are Saturday. A champion is crowned after Sunday's title game.

Run that structure through arithmetic. Two teams go home Tuesday night, four on Wednesday, four on Thursday, four on Friday, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Seventeen of the eighteen teams lose their last game on one of six nights, and the champion leaves Monday. A block built for Sunday's final is a block built for the one outcome most teams will not get.

One reservation, one reference, one confirmation

Send the whole party through a single request. Players, coaches, support staff, band and squad share a bus and a schedule, and split bookings create separate confirmations, separate card holds and separate chances for an error. One request states the party, the dates and the room types, and one confirmation comes back covering all of it.

One request goes to 50+ hotels in the destination, hotels reply within 24-72 hours, and there is no fee and no markup on the rate. The group rate applies from a block of 10+ rooms per night, and the platform notes that some properties discount from as few as five rooms depending on season and availability.

Build the rooming list before the exit round is known

Collect occupant names before the block is set. A tournament party is a fixed list of people with an unfixed checkout date, so the list is the one part of the booking that can be finished early. Assign every room to a named traveller and confirm in writing whether names can be swapped after the cut-off.

Late-addition and release terms

Ask for same-rate additions while inventory lasts, and ask for the attrition exposure in dollars rather than as a percentage.

The platform defines the two clauses. A room block is a set of rooms the hotel reserves for the group at the agreed rate. A cut-off date is the deadline for group members to book before rooms are released. Attrition is the minimum number of rooms the group commits to filling, and booking fewer rooms than agreed can carry a penalty.

Those two clauses pull against each other here. Size the block for the longest plausible run and the attrition clause prices an early exit. Size it for the opening round alone and the team has nowhere to sleep on Friday. The workable answer: hold the full window for the core travelling party, hold nothing beyond the round the team is seeded to reach, and set the cut-off late enough that the opening round is already played.

What the six-night swing costs

Price the range. A 20-person party in ten doubles, at a labelled example rate of $200 per room per night, with no Indianapolis rate published for these dates:

  • One night, if the team loses on Tuesday: 10 room-nights, $2,000.
  • Three nights, out on Thursday: 30 room-nights, $6,000.
  • Six nights, through Sunday: 60 room-nights, $12,000.

The platform publishes a group band of 15 to 40 percent below rack rates. At 15 percent off, the same three cases read $1,700, $5,100 and $10,200. At 40 percent off they read $1,200, $3,600 and $7,200. Across a full six nights and 20 people, the example rate is $600 per head, the 15 percent case is $510 per head and the 40 percent case is $360 per head.

The week carries a second event

The venue's own event feed lists Work Truck Week on March 10 to 12, 2027 at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, with a published forecast attendance of 14,000. The producer dates the run March 9 to 12, with the exhibit hall open March 10 to 12. Either reading lands on the tournament's Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Downtown Indianapolis carries 7,100 hotel rooms, and 4,700 of them connect to the Convention Center by skywalk. Those are the venue's published figures. A downtown arena week beside a 14,000-person trade show is the argument for sending the request early.

Band and squad props stop at the door

Gainbridge Fieldhouse publishes its prohibited-item list. The list names poles or sticks, and signs, flags or banners larger than 11 by 17 inches or affixed to any pole. Those items are standard kit for a travelling pep band or spirit squad. The venue also states that all exits past the ticket point are final, and that a guest cannot leave an event and re-enter it. Plan the party's day around a single entry.

What to put in the request

Four items belong in the text, because no source publishes them for a downtown property: the bed configurations the block holds, the breakfast opening hour, coach and bus parking, and whether the block sits on a shared floor. Add the exit-round structure, because a block through Saturday with a same-day release is a different request from a block through Sunday.

Submit the group request, then run the numbers on the group rate calculator and check the Indianapolis directory before the trade-show crowd books the same nights. The group rate terms page carries the block and cut-off definitions.
