A Free Team Afternoon on the King Mango Strut Route

The King Mango Strut runs on Sunday, 3 January 2027 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. through the streets of Coconut Grove. Admission is free. The organiser closes the route to traffic at 10 a.m.

Three numbers set the day for a team organiser: a 10 a.m. closure, a 2 p.m. start and a 6 p.m. finish. Ten people can spend that afternoon on the route for the price of parking and a meal.

The Published Day

The event page gives the location as the streets of Coconut Grove, the parade start at 2:00 p.m., the parade end at 6:00 p.m. and the street closure from 10:00 a.m. The home page names the 2 p.m. opening moment the banana drop. Post-parade entertainment on Commodore Plaza follows directly after the parade, with no lineup and no end time published.

The Strut has run since 1982 as a parody of the King Orange Bowl Jamboree Parade. The About page puts attendance at over 10,000 onlookers alongside hundreds of marchers.

The Route in Three Turns

The route begins at the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway, turns left onto Main Highway, left onto Grand Avenue at CocoWalk and left again at Commodore Plaza. The organiser adds that the parade goes around again when it is having too much fun.

The loop returns to Commodore Plaza on every pass, so a team that splits up can regroup at the start corner.

Parking Before Ten

The organiser names the Municipal Garage at Oak Avenue and Mary Street as ample parking a block from the route, and lists CocoWalk, Mayfair, Coconut Grove Playhouse, St. Stephens Episcopal Church and Coconut Grove Elementary School as further options.

No parking rate is published. A team that arrives before 10 a.m. parks ahead of the closure and walks one block to the start corner.

The Free Bike Valet

Bike Coconut Grove runs free attended bicycle valet from 12 to 5:30 p.m. on 3 January, in the courtyard of St. Stephen's church off the St. Stephen's parking lot on Main Highway. A team staying within riding distance moves ten people to the route with no vehicle and no garage space.

The Rules the Organiser Prints

Children under 16 are recommended to come with an adult. Weapons are prohibited. Skateboards, rollerblades, bicycles and scooters are not recommended on the route. A drone needs an FAA registration number and a flight path approved at the parade office at least one week before the event. Photography, video and live streaming are permitted.

Pets stay at home. The Strut sells no alcohol, and the restaurants and bars along the route serve at their own discretion. Food and drink sit outside the free admission.

If the Team Marches

Entry carries no fee. The Participate page asks for a Strutter Application and a signed waiver. Each contingent must provide monitors, who attend a mandatory orientation on the afternoon of the parade. Nothing may be thrown on the route, candy included.

Rooms for a Team That Travels In

bookmyteam.org carries a seller-of-travel notice, last updated 18 October 2026, that lists Florida, Hawaii, Iowa and Washington as states where it cannot process hotel booking requests for residents or for travel. Coconut Grove sits in Florida, so the block goes to the hotels direct.

Most hotels set group rates at ten or more rooms per night. Ask each property for its check-in hour against the 10 a.m. closure, its checkout hour against the 6 p.m. finish, and a room to hold luggage between the two.

Admission is free for ten. The bike valet is free. Parking carries the garage's posted rate and the meal is the team's choice, so neither a ticket nor a minimum spend applies.
