Hardly Strictly Bluegrass ran Friday, October 2, Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4, 2026, across Hellman Hollow and the Lindley and Marx meadows in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The organiser states this is a free event with no tickets needed, and adds that it does not have the resources to answer every logistics question.
Admission is zero. The trip budget sits in transport and lodging.
Gate and performance times
Entrances open at 11 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Performances end at 7 p.m. each day. Four entrances serve the site: JFK Drive and Transverse Drive; Fulton Street and 30th Avenue; JFK Drive and 36th Avenue; and the South Polo Field entrance at Middle Drive and Metson Road.
The organiser calls the festival family-friendly, warns of large crowds and loud music, and asks parents to bring ear protection for very young children.
The festival publishes its own pickup points
Muni serves the north side of the park on the 5 Fulton, 5R Fulton Rapid, 31 Balboa, 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid lines. The south side is served by the N Judah train and the 7 Haight/Noriega bus, and the 29 Sunset runs through the park on Crossover Drive. The organiser states that extra Muni service runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with regular fares on every route. Clipper Mobile and MuniMobile both sell fares before the ride.
For a crew arriving by taxi, the stands are on Fulton from 22nd to 24th. Ride-share drop-off and pick-up sits around Washington High School, on 30th Avenue between Anza and Balboa and on Balboa between 30th and 31st. Pick-ups are on Irving between 25th and 27th Avenue.
The organiser adds one rule that decides how a group moves. Because of the traffic coming to and from the park, the ride-share apps accept pin drops only from the designated pick-up area. Every person walks to the pin before calling the ride. A manager splitting a team across several cars names one pin as the rendezvous and holds the group to it.
The organiser expects the park service to run its shuttle service.
The park is swept every night
Waste management sweeps the park each evening, so no space can be saved for the following day. Blankets and groundcovers left unoccupied for more than an hour are subject to removal, and the organiser asks that items are not left behind. Each day is built from the gates opening.
What the gates allow and what they stop
Security includes walking through body scanners and may include a physical search of bags and belongings. SFPD, K9 and tactical units are positioned inside and outside the venue.
Each person may carry one bag and one personal item. Clear bags may be no larger than 22 by 15 by 10 inches, and small bags, fanny packs and purses no larger than 6 by 8 by 3 inches. Hydration packs of 2.5 litres or smaller, or refillable water bottles, are allowed. Small soft coolers of 12-pack size or smaller are allowed. Wagons, strollers, short back chairs and non-clear medium backpacks, totes or soft coolers go through a secondary search.
Umbrellas, tables, tents and shade structures, hard coolers, glass, kegs, hard liquor, high back chairs, selfie sticks, drones, fireworks, flags or poles and personal instruments are barred. The festival is cashless, and no ATMs are on site.
Two published lines set the blanket limit. The allowed-items list caps tarps and blankets at smaller than 6 by 8 feet. The blanket section limits a blanket or groundcover to 5 by 7 feet. Plan to 5 by 7.
Alcohol, smoking and water
No alcohol is sold inside the park. Park rules allow beer and wine in non-glass containers and forbid hard alcohol and glass. SFPD will confiscate hard alcohol. Smoking is prohibited throughout Golden Gate Park under a city ordinance that took effect in 2005. Free water refills are available at four locations, including near the permanent bathrooms between the Banjo Stage and Arrow Meadow.
Where the crew sleeps
The festival routes the room question to the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, a travel site, or the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, which takes bookings on sfvisitor.org and answers at 415-391-2000, toll free at 888-782-9673. Camping is not allowed in Golden Gate Park. The organiser points to Rob Hill Campground in the Presidio and an RV park by Candlestick.
bookMyTeam negotiates group rates for a block of 10 or more rooms per night and publishes a band of 15-40% below rack rates, with no booking fee and no markup. A four-to-six-room crew sits below the usual block threshold, though the platform notes that some hotels discount for as few as five rooms depending on season and availability. Its San Francisco directory lists 562 hotels available.
Send the dates and the room count through the request form, and price the band with the group rate calculator before the hotels answer.
The two budget lines
Free entry with no tickets leaves two lines: getting the team to the park, and sleeping the team nearby. The festival's own pickup answers carry the transport plan, and the nightly sweep fixes the shape of the stay, because each day starts from the gates. Take the free admission as the trip's one certain saving and spend the planning time on the two lines that remain.
