An offsite with a published run sheet
Leap's 44th annual Sandcastle Classic takes place on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street. Building runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event closes at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
Leap Arts in Education has run the competition since 1983, and the organisation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1979. Youth Art Exchange will assume leadership of Leap Arts as the two organisations come together into one organisation.
The published team model puts three to five companies on one team with students from a local elementary school. The organiser caps the 2026 field at 30 teams.
Leap carries two crowd figures on its own website: more than 5,000 people in the event copy and more than 4,000 people in the page's own description.
The beach-day schedule
Clock times are published for the whole day. A planner can pass this grid to a driver and a caterer unchanged.
Teams check in from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and move to an assigned beach site. Teams may begin to prep their sites from 10 a.m., and students arrive between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. Sandcastle building starts at 11 a.m.
Castle introductions by student representatives run at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. DJ Wonway Posibul performs at noon. Cuicacalli Ballet Folklórico performs at 12:30 p.m. Building stops at 2:30 p.m. A performance runs at 3 p.m. The award ceremony begins at 3:15 p.m. with KOIT's Freska as host, and the event ends at 3:30 p.m. Plan guests for 3:15 p.m.
Build rules that set the kit list
The organiser limits the materials in a finished structure to water in any form, sand, and biodegradable material found on the beach during competition hours. Tools must be handheld or human-powered. Generators are barred at all times, and wooden forms and substructures are barred from the finished structure. Professional sandcastle consulting disqualifies a team, and the organiser calls the event amateur.
Leap publishes a tool list sized for a 60-person team: 30 five-gallon buckets, 15 shovels, 10 smaller shovels, 10 brushes, 10 garden trowels, 10 wood floats, 10 joint compound knives, five plastic putty knives and 15 to 20 spray bottles. Gloves are listed at 10, and safety glasses carry no published count.
Cost, deadlines and the team ceiling
A Sandcastle team pays a $500 registration fee and sets a fundraising goal of at least $5,000.
The FAQ page puts the deadline to register a Sandcastle Team at August 15, 2026. Individual participants may register through October 15, 2026, and the public may drop in on October 24 without registering.
Leap's 2026 goal is $300,000. The organiser states that the Sandcastle Classic raises 30 percent of the cost of its arts education programs, which serve 8,500 students across 30 Bay Area schools each year.
Sponsor tiers and the branded footprint
The published sponsor table runs from $500 to $25,000 across eight levels.
The presenting sponsor at $25,000 takes co-branding on all formats and an introduction of teams on the day. The stage sponsor at $10,000 takes branding visible to the crowd and an introduction of artists. The community castle sponsor at $5,000 backs the open build area. Two building sponsors sit at $3,000 each: the promo item and award sponsor, and the water monster. Two supporting sponsors sit at $1,000 each: the pre- and post-event sponsorships and the classroom design session. A branded beach booth at $500 gives a company a six-foot table near the entrance.
Logos and materials are due by October 1, 2026. Sponsorship enquiries go to sandcastle@leaparts.org.
Rooms for the team
The organiser publishes no host hotel, no room block, no nightly rate and no cut-off date, and it publishes no shuttle and no parking plan. Put those questions in writing first.
bookMyTeam lists 562 hotels in San Francisco. bookMyTeam publishes a 15 to 40 percent band below rack rates, 50 or more hotels per request, and responses in 24 to 72 hours. The platform charges no fee, and you pay the hotel directly. A Friday, October 23 arrival and a Monday, October 26 checkout covers the Saturday build as a three-night stay.
Submit one request for the team at bookmyteam.org/rfp/submit. Add the Balboa Street address to the notes so each hotel quotes its distance to Ocean Beach.
