Thirty-Five Performances, December 4 to 27

Helgi Tomasson's Nutcracker runs December 4-27, 2026 at the War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Avenue at Grove Street. San Francisco Ballet publishes 35 performances inside that window: 15 at 7:00 p.m., 13 at 2:00 p.m., three at 6:00 p.m., two at 11:00 a.m. and two at 4:00 p.m.

Seventeen of the 35 start before 5:00 p.m.

The published run time is Act I at 47 minutes, a 20-minute intermission and Act II at 50 minutes. That is 117 minutes, or 1 hour 57 minutes in the auditorium. A 7:00 p.m. curtain puts a group back in the lobby just before 9:00 p.m.

The company states that it presented America's first Nutcracker in 1944.

Getting 20 People to Civic Center

The Opera House sits at the corner of Grove Street in the Civic Center. The company describes it as a short walk from the Civic Center BART and MUNI stations and the Van Ness MUNI station, and encourages public transit under the city's Transit First Policy. BART trip planning runs through bart.gov or 650-992-2278. MUNI answers on 415-701-2311.

Four garages serve the Opera House. The nearest is the Performing Arts Garage. The Civic Center Garage, the Opera Plaza Garage and the UC Law SF Parking Garage are also nearby. The company warns that Civic Center parking can be limited during performances and that entering a garage in the hour before curtain is time-consuming.

Arrival timing decides whether the group is seated. Ticket Services asks patrons to arrive at least 45 minutes before the performance because the ticket lines can run long. Latecomers can stand in standing room or watch on a monitor, and the house may seat them during Nutcracker at the discretion of management.

Every person entering the Opera House needs a ticket regardless of age, and each child occupies their own seat beside an accompanying adult.

A bag must fit under the seat or on a lap at roughly 14 by 14 by 6 inches, and larger items go to coat check. Screening sits at the north and south carriage entrances and the main entrance on Van Ness, and tickets are scanned before screening.

Accessible seating is on the Orchestra and Dress Circle levels, booked through 415-865-2000. Wheelchair entry runs through the front doors on Van Ness Avenue, the Taxi Ramp on Grove Street and the Carriage Entrance on the north side. Accessible restrooms sit on every floor except the Orchestra and Balcony levels, and accessible drinking fountains sit on every floor except the 5th floor Balcony level. The company does not supply wheelchairs or personal assistance.

Twenty Tickets Go Through the Group Desk

Group pricing starts at 20 people. San Francisco Ballet states that it offers discounted prices for groups of 20 or more and takes the details at 415-865-2000, the same line as Ticket Services, staffed Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The production page publishes no ticket price, so the group rate arrives as a quote on that call. Two published fees belong in the total. Every seat carries a $1 or $2 facility fee inside the ticket price. Exchanges cost $20 per order in advance and $25 per ticket on the performance date up to three hours before the start, and exchanges are not allowed inside those three hours.

Standing room tickets are $10 in person on the day of the performance, behind a 4-foot-4-inch wall at the rear of the main floor and the balcony, and cash is preferred at that counter.

Pre-Order Dinner on the North Mezzanine

Global Gourmet Catering runs the Opera House food and beverage. North Box Restaurant sits on the north mezzanine level and overlooks the main lobby, with California cuisine and a published Fall 2026 menu. The dining page gives the North Box opening window as two hours before 2:00 p.m. Sunday and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday-through-Saturday performances, and one hour before the 2:00 p.m. Tuesday-through-Saturday, 7:00 p.m. Sunday and 6:00 p.m. shows. Global Gourmet recommends that patrons pre-order their meals.

Prelude at the Opera House and its bar sit in the Lower Lounge, entered through the North Carriage entrance under the awning. Prelude opens two hours before 2:00 p.m. Sunday and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday-to-Saturday performances and one hour before 6:00 p.m. shows, and its pre-paid buffet dinners are booked through OpenTable.

Intermission pre-orders go to operahousepreorder@ggcatering.com before the curtain rises. No outside food is allowed. Food is not permitted in the auditorium, and drinks bought at the theatre bars are, in the approved compostable cup and lid.

The lobbies close 30 minutes after the performance ends and the doors are locked. Book the return transport for that window.

Nightcap and the Relaxed Performance

Two published options sit beside the run. The Nutcracker Nightcap is December 4 at 9:00 p.m. for the 21-and-over crowd, at $150, with signature cocktails, sweet and savoury treats, activities and dancing. Nightcap tickets do not include a performance ticket. A Sensory Friendly Performance runs December 27 at 11:00 a.m. for neurodiverse audiences, first-time balletgoers and young children.

Rooms Within Walking Distance

A team arriving for a matinee or an evening curtain needs rooms near Civic Center. bookMyTeam negotiates group rates for a block of 10 or more rooms per night and publishes a typical saving of 15 to 40 percent below the Best Available Rate, with no fees and payment direct to the hotel. The platform also states that some hotels may discount for as few as 5 rooms depending on season and availability. Send the date, the room count and the target rate through the RFP form, or start with the San Francisco directory.
